Consultant urologists and senior urological trainees gathered in Cambridge, in April for an intensive two‑day masterclass focused on modern endoscopic enucleation of the prostate. The course, led by consultant urologists, Mr Tev Aho and Mr Laurian Dragos, brought together delegates from the UK, Norway, Sweden and Hungary for a blend of expert teaching, live surgery and open discussion.
Expert Teaching to Open the Course
The programme began on Friday evening with a welcome meeting and two specialist lectures – Mr Aho opened the session with an in‑depth exploration of contemporary enucleation techniques, including:
– Early apical release
– En bloc enucleation
– Ejaculation‑sparing approaches
His talk provided a detailed walkthrough of anatomical strategy, energy application and decision‑making during complex cases.
He was followed by Mr Dragos who delivered a technical overview of laser platforms used in prostate enucleation. His presentation focused particularly on the Dornier Thulio pulsed Thulium:YAG laser, outlining its characteristics, clinical advantages and how it compares with other commonly used systems.
The evening concluded with a shared dinner, giving delegates the chance to continue discussions in a relaxed setting and exchange experiences with the faculty.
A Full Day of Live Surgical Training
Saturday was dedicated entirely to theatre-based learning in Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Across five live cases, Mr Aho demonstrated the full workflow of prostate enucleation using the Dornier Thulio pulsed Thulium:YAG laser, with a range of prostate sizes up to 160g.
Throughout the day, he highlighted:
– The precision of the Thulio laser for creating the early apical release
– The clarity of the surgical field due to minimal tissue discolouration
– The haemostatic performance of the laser during enucleation
– The consistency and safety of the en bloc technique across varying prostate sizes
Delegates were able to observe each step of the procedure in real time, ask questions, and discuss technique selection, troubleshooting and perioperative considerations.
The course was supported by Dornier, with their clinical specialist, Paolo Todarello attending in person to assist with technical aspects and equipment setup. Additional local support was provided by novus med, who are the GB distributor for the Dornier Thulio laser.
